They’re known as man’s best friend.  Aside from sweet snuggles and puppy kisses, research has found that long-term pet ownership may keep cognitive skills stay sharp as you age.  In addition to this, researchers at the University of Michigan found that pet ownership is associated with positive mental health.  During this study, researchers found that four themes of pet ownership emerged when speaking to active adults 65+: comfort and safety, social inclusion and participation, purposeful routine and structure: and playing a meaningful role.
